Three shallow scrapes did more than one big pond
Ade O. · Somerset Levels · 6 acres of wet meadow
The problem
The wet corner held water all winter and nothing in July. We wanted breeding waders and amphibians, not a fishing pond.
What we tried
A digger driver who'd done wetland work cut three scrapes of 15-40cm depth with long shallow margins, spoil spread thin rather than banked. No liner, no inlet.
Timeline
Frogspawn in year one. Snipe probing the margins in winter two.
Cost and effort
£850 for a day and a half of machine time.
